Employee Spotlight on Tom Dickinson

December 16, 2016 - Burbank, CA - Tom Dickinson's distinguished career in broadcasting began as an Associate Producer at Bob Speck Sports, where he produced University of Southern California Baseball, Basketball, Football and local NFL pre-season football. He has been one of Bexel's most valuable assets since 1995 when he joined the team as Vice President of Sales during the acquisition of BERC. That's impressive! We decided to put an Employee Spotlight on Tom Dickinson, a.k.a. the Mayor of Bexel, to learn some career and personal insights.

History with Bexel

Year Started: 1995 with BexelWho were you with before the merge? For how long?Broadcast Equipment Rental Company (BERC) 1981 – 1995. Started at BERC a few months after Bexel started as a company.Position when first started with Bexel: V.P. SalesPositions held throughout tenure: V.P. Sales, General Manager, V.P. Operations and Engineering.Position now: Chief Technology Officer (CTO)What is one of your fondest memories while working at Bexel?Meeting all the people and see how the company, and people, have changed over the years.What is one of your favorite accomplishments at Bexel?I suppose keeping the Olympic contract in place as it changed from a personal contact to a company and now to OBS under different people. Though it has been easy as the reason we keep doing the Olympics because of the great people at Bexel that work the show and make it happen. I am just in the background.

Personal Insights

Growing up, what was your career choice? It has always been to be in television. What did you study in school?Communications – Broadcasting at Washington State University. Received Edward R Murrow Award for Outstanding SeniorWhere was your first job? Bob Speck Sports producing sports in LA.What did you do there? Associate Producer of USC sports, produced USC Football, Basketball, Baseball and Track. LA Rams and Raiders Pre-Season Football and the Raiders Radio Network. The John Robinson Coach Show and the Steve Garvey Baseball show.What advice did you receive, personal or work-related, that really resonated with you? Be true to yourself. Make sure your work values align with your personal values.What is one of your proudest moments? I unit managed the last fight Muhammad Ali did in 1981 in the Bahamas, “Drama in the Bahamas”. It was not a sanctioned fight but I went to Nassau for 4 weeks and managed all the logistics of the match. Hotels, transportation, crew, catering, stadium set-up, b-roll footage and coordinating with the officials. I had been out of college just under 3 years and it was job of a lifetime and with Muhammad Ali.What is the inspiration for your sense of fashion… or swag? Hmmm…. Being comfortable!Any hidden talents? I grew up on a farm with all types of animals and had my own horses. I road them a lot before moving to L.A. So in High School I wore cowboy boots, a denim jacket, 501 button fly jeans and a big silver belt buckle with a turquoise rock. What a statement! I was also in a 50’s rock n’ roll revival band called The Lipps in the 70’s and we traveled the western U.S. in a 1955 Dodge school bus. I climbed Mount Rainer when I was 14. What a beautiful view from there.Favorite place you’ve traveled? Everyone knows it is Maui, Hawaii!Do you have a dream travel destination or experience that you would like to accomplish or achieve? My parents love to travel on “road trips” and camp out, so I was able to travel to 49 out of 50 states before I was 21.
