Bexel BFS - The Ultimate Fiber Support at 2008 DNC/RNC

Bexel Broadcast Fiber Solutions - Bexel BFS: As covered in many specific news releases, Bexel's Broadcast Fiber Solutions unveiled its latest innovation - the Optical Support Vehicle II - at the DNCC convention. The Bexel OSV II was the primary distribution source for the networks and subscribers for the DNC Program and pool camera feeds. But the addition of the new OSV II onsite as the source for the pool HD camera feeds the networks used to present their convention coverage was only part of the Bexel BFS experience - BFS was out in full force for both of the national conventions.

At the DNC...
Bexel provided both Optical Gear and auxiliary support gear to most of the news organizations that attended

  • CNN utilized the new Stratos CWDM'd frames with an Adder 162 System from the ESU truck to the "CNN Grill" which was CNN's main point of broadcast and office space. They also used 8 Stratos VMC sets and two Adder 161 systems to get from the ESU into the Pepsi Center. On Wednesday evening they moved that package over to Invesco Field to cover the Obama acceptance speech.

  • Fox News used 12 Stratos VMC sets and an Adder 882i between the ESU and the Fox Compound.

  • The News Hour with Jim Lehrer chose Bexel as it's primary source for its fiber needs and auxiliary support gear. Bexel provided the cable needs prior to the event. Bexel provided 23,000' of fiber cable, 400' of 10 channel HD video multi cable, and 6600' of 25 pair CAT 3 cable to link up their mobile unit, workspace, A Set, and B Set. After the Bexel team came in to terminate over 430 fiber terminations in 2 days, we had two engineers onsite to hook up the gear and provide onsite support. In addition to the 30 plus Stratos VMC Sets, Diamondback systems, and Adder 162 systems, Bexel also provided the QTV teleprompters, multiple monitors, and two ENG Camera packages with auxiliary gear.

  • ABC News used our services for multiple aspects for their DNC coverage. In terms of Fiber Gear, ABC chose four Viper 800 systems for Video, two Adder 162 systems and an Adder 161 system for audio, Stratos VMC sets for their HD needs, and 5122 and 5142 throw-downs to move analog video and audio. They also utilized 6 AJA FS1's, a Yamaha DM2000, an Adam Intercom System, and a multitude of intercom gear which included beltpacks, headsets, biscuit boxes, and also a handful of monitors.

At the RNC...
Bexel BFS duplicated many of the same packages that overlapped with the DNC creating interesting logistic and availability challenges...
  • CNN had a similar package at the RNC as to that at the DNC. They had 8 Stratos VMC units.

  • Fox News had an exact copy of their DNC order at RNC.

  • The News Hour with Jim Lehrer also copied their DNC package in terms of gear. From a cabling stand point Bexel provided 9,000 feet of fiber cable, 350 feet of 5 Channel HD video multi cable, and terminated 250 fiber terminations. BFS also provided the same gear at the RNC as the DNC.

  • ABC News utilized nearly an exact duplicate package at the RNC. The only difference was that BFS also provided 144 fiber terminations prior to the event there as well.

"...Bexel in particular stepped up to the plate and hit it out of the park. Those impeccable assets combined with a seasoned, top notch crew, gave Jack, Jen, John, and Dan, all the right tools and toys. And what a job they did with them!" - Peter Kallander, CBS
