HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel airs September 16 (2008) for the first time in High Definition (10 PM, EST on HBO). Bexel's New York office provided the custom HD flypack for the show (everything but the cameras, Thomson LDK-8000's, which HBO purchased specifically for this show). The show was shot 1080i/59.94 and recorded in HD-CAM SR format. Minus the cameras, Bexel provided all audio and video, most of which rolled from the US Open compound directly to HBO. Additionally, Bexel New York's Rental Manager, Mike King (after recieving the 'handoff' of this opportunity from Lee Estroff, a BBS Director) had to produce fifteen (15) Folsom ImagePro-HD scan converters (with less than 24 hours notice!) to make HBO's on-set virtual Cityscape background a reality. King states, "...I give special thanks to Jason Tapia (Burbank Operations) for the massive assist in turning key elements so fast from the U.S. Open!" HBO purchased seven (7) Barco 80" DLP screens for the new set, and they would not have been ready for prime-time without the Bexel support. Says Jon Campbell, Engineering Manager of Bexel New York, "Thanks to all involved - we will be repeating this setup for tapings of Real Sports in October, November, and possibly twice in January as HBO upgrades their E. 23rd Street studio in Manhattan to HD..."
