Custom Engineering - 3G Wireless Advantages

From Adam Nepp, 3G Wireless
I believe the main selling point of 3G's system (NuComm) is scalability. Meaning? Well, all components of our systems are adjustable, as opposed to others that have one or two options. The main example of this is bit rate (data rate = video quality). 3G's system can be configured to operate as high as 64 Mbit/s, as opposed to [another competitor's] which is locked off at either 10 or 20 Mbit/s. The advantage of this is that with a lower bit rate, the video quality can either look "soft" or there is a tendency to see MPEG "artifacts," whereas our shot will look noticeably "sharper." The true test of this is when production "cuts" between a "hard" camera and an RF cam - the higher bit rate will allow more information to past over the link, hence "sharpening" the video quality.

Delay / Latency is also an advantage. If need be, because it is controllable, the Txer can go as low as 15mS(half-frame)delay in 720P, which is not visible to the eye. Normally, the system operates at 42mS, but when we're required to interface with a sideline reporter on a wired mic, we can easily dial it down. That is not to say we can't always operate at that level; but it must be known that there is a slight trade off in terms of robustness of signal, and/or it increases the chance for RF break-up. Don't quote me but I believe [a certain competitor's "“ and yes, Adam, we DID quote you!] is locked off at 48mS or higher.

Another advantage in regards to scalability, is output power. The Txer can transmit anywhere from 5mW to 250mW, depending on application and need. It is menu controllable with no need for additional hardware. I believe that [a certain competitor's] system can only operate at 100mW regardless of what is required, translating into additional hardware for additional receivers.

Occupied bandwidth is also scalable. Meaning, the bandwidth can be set any where from 6MHz wide to 24MHz wide. This is an advantage because it gives the Txer the ability to adapt to the local RF environment it case when some would not be able to operate.

A final advantage of the 3G system over all others, is that the system is not a closed product. The gear is constantly getting software updates to increase efficiency and decrease latency, whereas other systems were purchased "off the shelf", years ago, and the product(s) has not changed. Also, our system is the only system on the market that can take in native 24P.

To Recap Advantages:

  • Scalable and adaptive
  • Higher bit rate = better video quality
  • Lowest delay on the market
  • Higher out-put power = better range
  • 3G's system is not complacent...always evolving to the next need.

Please feel free to ring me with any questions, I welcome the chance to help.

Kind regards,
Adam R. Nepp
