Asset Management 2008: Trends and Technology /
Codecs and File-based Challenges /
Improving the League/Network Relationship
The 2008 Sports Asset Management event was the logical progression from the first SAM event, held in Secaucus last year. The 2007 event included a tour of the NBA Entertainment facility and this year, the first day background material was centered around the NASCAR Media Group facility. Attendees were treated to a tour of the NASCAR facility and an overview of recent production, asset management, and archiving systems. Certain technology decisions were made to help NASCAR meet their own needs as well as their fans and broadcast partners.
The second day provided panel discussions on archiving and asset management systems that are fast becoming a part of current and future workflows.
100 SVG members attended the two-day session with much discussion on delivery mediums, codec options, longevity concerns, and moving to a file-based operation. Some of the key points discussed were related to how the leagues and networks will handle legacy content formats within the current Codecs. Proxy and DNX workflows were also discussed as to the detail that file-based asset management requires in keeping meta-data synced with the content.
PGA, Raycom Sports, ESPN, NBA, MLB, and many others discussed their current file management systems and format/codec structure. Formats and storage devices for long-term needs are critical for the networks and many ideas were exchanged on how to proceed with buying into the best digital archive and avoiding hardware and Codec obsolescence.
Lee Estroff, Helen Carr, and Jim Richardson attended the event for Bexel. Jon McCarroll from Bexel Atlanta oversaw the A/V support for the event.
