...and here's the FULL story, as promised: Sports fans listen in on the coaches' courtside comments through custom audio solution developed by Zaxcom and Bexel Broadcast Services Turner Sports deploys custom solution for 2009 NBA season POMPTON PLAINS, N.J. - June 13, 2009 A custom-made audio transmitter solution developed by Zaxcom, Inc. and Bexel Broadcast Services is bringing basketball fans even closer to the action by enabling sports broadcasters to transmit coaches' live courtside comments during televised games. The system, based on Zaxcom's TRX900 digital wireless transmitter, was used successfully for the first time by Turner Sports for its live game coverage during the 2009 NBA season. Zaxcom and Bexel designed the audio solution to meet three requirements: the transmitter would need to be unobtrusive and comfortable for coaches to wear, it would need to give them the option of muting the microphone with an easy-to-use on-off toggle when they did not want their comments heard, and it would need to provide digital encryption to ensure that private discussions could not be "hacked" by unauthorized listeners. The solution meets these requirements by outfitting coaches with a Sennheiser lavaliere mic and a TRX900 transmitter equipped with a quarter-inch toggle switch for the mute capability. "The Zaxcom TRX900 offered the perfect solution because of its extremely small, lightweight profile and its ability to be digitally encrypted," said Lee Estroff, director of technical sales, Bexel. "We were working on a very tight timeline to deliver a system before the start of the season, and Zaxcom offered the flexibility and agility we needed to develop the custom features. I can think of no other product on the market that could have met all of our client's criteria." "Every season, sports broadcasters look for new features to add that will provide a richer TV viewing experience for their fans. With our audio transmission solution, viewers can now get great insight into game strategy and better appreciate how coaches and players react in certain situations. At the same time, Bexel has made it really easy for the coaches to block anything they don't want heard on national television," said Glenn Sanders, Zaxcom's president. "So far, the system has been used for more than 90 NBA games without a single technical glitch and it's been widely embraced by on-site audio engineers and even the coaches themselves."
